Are garage sales worth it? Or a thing of the past? We wanted to know the answer, so we decided to have one.
It turns out garage sales can take up a significant amount of time and involve a lot of work. Although it was a lot of work, our sale was successful and well worth it. If anyone is considering doing this, I would ask you to figure out why. Do you want to get rid of clutter? Do you need extra money? Are you moving? Is it time for change and a fresh start? There is no wrong answer, it just may help you prioritize and execute. Now go out and get started!
It can be easy to put it off, but if you resist the urge to procrastinate the potential return can be very rewarding. If you start collecting items in your house and realize there isn’t enough volume call, up some of your friends and do a combined yard sale. Another suggestion is to post items in buy/sell groups on Facebook, Ebay, Craigslist, Letgo, etc. These sites can be worth exploring especially if you have collectibles or high value items that you may need a discerning buyer. It can save you the frustration of haggling with someone who wants your vintage handbag for 50 cents.
Where to start
Anyways, we collected all the items in our home we no longer wanted. Then, we set everything up on tables in the garage (that we would eventually pull out on the day of the sale). The next step was to price items, be careful not to get carried away, remember your audience. Make sure to price reasonably if you want to make sales.
Trying to get organized before the sale looked quite the opposite, it was a mess! To advertise we put signs on the corners and posted in local Facebook groups. Thursday turned out to be super busy. We had less traffic on Friday but still got rid of a good amount of stuff. The grand total profits ended up being around $1,700 and the house is a lot ligher, so in my book it was a victory. Anything not sold was donated to charity, ensuring all our old treasures found new homes.
Whether you need the money for rent, starting a business, or just extra spending money a garage sale might be worth a shot!
